The Chemistry Engineering Degree Program at Emory University
The Chemistry Engineering Degree Program at Emory UniversityThe chemistry engineering degree at Emory University offers a unique experience for students. With over 40 faculty members, they understand that the educational experience is as important as the graduate career. Through teaching and research, they are able to teach students how to learn. They understand that the learning experience is just as important as the graduate education. This applies to the Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. degree programs.Through Emory's Ph.D. program, students will focus on their chosen field of study. They will learn about the characteristics and challenges of this field, including topics such as laboratory safety, human biological resources, biotechnology, plant pathology, and life science management. One of the major areas of focus is organic chemistry. It is important to understand how chemistry works. In the formative years, they will learn about how chemistry affects human health and how it can impact a he althy life.Students can take courses in several areas of their choice, such as the structure and function of organic molecules. They may also learn about chemical kinetics, and laboratory work that may involve liquid culture, capillary electrophoresis, and atomic absorption spectroscopy. They will be exposed to the basic principles and information about some of the most widely used laboratory methods in the world today. The M.S. program at Emory offers a much different type of curriculum. This program, along with the B.S. program, provides a solid foundation in basic and applied science and prepares students for careers in academia, industry, and government. Some of the courses include general science and mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, and environmental studies. Students will learn the skills they need to take part in research projects. Is Counting Calories Important
Is Counting Calories Important Should I Be Calorie Counting? ChaptersHow Many Calories Do I Need Each Day?Try A Calorie Tracker To Keep On Top Of Your IntakeWhat If You Need Some Extra Help Besides Calorie Counting? It can be so difficult to navigate the world of food today â" with so much convenience food readily available at the supermarket and an increasing number of us eating out or buying take away, it can be hard to know what exactly youâre putting into your body when you eat. When it comes to weight loss, one commonly debated topic is whether or not you actually need to control the number of calories you eat each day in order to lose weight. In fact, should you be watching the number of calories you eat every day, even if youâre not trying to shed a few pounds? This article outlines what calories are, and when calorie counting may be a good approach for you.If you need any further advice on what the best food intake is for you or would like suggestions on how to maintain your current body weight or get a good energy balance in your l ife, then you can also turn to a nutrition tutor at Superprof for some additional hints and tips.Take nutrition courses with the best tutors here.A healthy balanced diet is a great way to ensure you're getting the best nutrients if you're calorie counting. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, pasja1000, Pixabay)Gender;Your activity rate and metabolism; andWhether youâre looking to gain or lose weight. For instance, if youâre relatively inactive and spend most of your time behind a desk, with only an hour or so spare for exercise a week, your body wonât need as many calories compared to an individual who spends ten hours in the gym every week and works outside. As such, daily guidelines for calorie intake should be taken as a guideline only, although if youâre looking for more detailed calorie intake information specific to your circumstances, you can sometimes find personalised calorie estimates online, or if in any doubt you could also speak to your dietician about plans.Exercise and calo rie counting can be an effective strategy if you're looking to lose or maintain your weight. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, GDJ, Pixabay)Try A Calorie Tracker To Keep On Top Of Your IntakeOnce you know how many calories you should be eating on a daily basis to maintain your current weight, you could then use a calorie tracker to help you achieve any weight-loss goals you have or to try and stop you from going over your own daily recommended intake. When it comes to weight-loss, the key to success is fairly simple in theory â" you just need to ensure that you are consuming fewer calories than your body needs. When this happens, you should start to lose weight. Conversely, if you consume more calories than needed on a regular basis, then this excess will be stored as fat, causing you to gain weight. As a result, calorie trackers can be really helpful when youâre trying to lose weight, as they keep on top of what youâve eaten during the day and let you know when youâre close to, at, or o ver your limit. This means that you should be able to make informed food choices throughout the day.If youâd also prefer to digitise your weight-loss efforts, there are also a number of calorie tracker apps you can use to help you keep on top of your food consumption, and a quick google can let you know the most highly rated ones around, including My Fitness Pal. Alternatively, if you prefer to keep track of your calories yourself, you could also use tools such as the NHSâ online calorie checker. The important thing to bear in mind when it comes to calorie reduction is that you donât want to overdo it â" ideally reducing calories is a balancing act between giving your body enough nutrition and sustenance so you remain healthy, but also in a slightly reduced quantity so that you lose weight.Counting calories with a calculator can be a great way to achieve this balance, particularly if you're concerned with how many calories you consume at present.Itâs inadvisable to go for an y extreme dieting or excessive calorie-restrictive diets, as they may do more damage to your body in the long run, and the chances of you sticking to such a tough diet are lower compared to a more measured approach to weight loss.If youâre ever in doubt about how to safely lose weight, make sure you speak to your healthcare provider for their input.Find a nutritionist near me here. While the occasional sweet treat is ok, if you're looking to lose weight by calorie counting there are better food alternatives out there! (Image Source: CC0 1.0, haraldheuser, Pixabay)What If You Need Some Extra Help Besides Calorie Counting?Ultimately, calorie counting is just one part of a wider picture when it comes to our health.Although some diets make a lot out of the benefits of calorie counting, itâs also worth bearing in mind that there are other things you should be mindful of as well when it comes to maintaining or losing weight, such as:How much exercise youâre doing; andWhat youâre ea ting on a daily basis.Taking each in turn, the amount that you do, or donât exercise, can also have a huge impact on how much weight you lose, and can also positively impact your health more widely. Often, regular exercise combined with calorie counting can lead to successful, and prolonged, weight loss. The NHS recommends that on average, adults aged between 19 and 64 should look to be active daily, for example, 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week coupled with strength exercises at least twice a week. However, you may wish to do more than this if your aim is to lose weight. Before beginning any exercise program, it would be wise to speak to your healthcare professional to ensure that you are fit enough to exercise for the length and intensity that you would like to, particularly if youâre very overweight or have done very little exercise in the past, and are looking at burning a large number of calories as part of your exercise regime. When it comes to how much youâ re eating on a day to day basis, itâs also important to note that calorie counting does not take into account the kind of food that you eat. While you could, for example, eat three chocolate bars and a meal at McDonald's in a day to meet the requirements of your calorie tracker, youâd naturally be much better off staying away from unhealthy foods and meeting your calorie quota through fresh, nutritious meals that keep you fuller for longer.Having a balanced diet is key to any weight loss or weight maintenance regime. Keeping a food journal can be a great way to keep track of what you're eating on a daily basis, and you can try and spot patterns in the kind of foods that you eat, and which nutrients you may be missing out on.Learning how to read a food or nutrition label on packaging can also be a great step towards a healthy food regime and avoiding weight issues such as obesity, and can help ensure you make positive food choices that give you more energy, even if you are trying to cut calories. If youâre looking for a bit of meal inspiration and would like ideas for weekly meals that are not only good for you but can help you reach a specific calorie goal each day for weight loss purposes, then you might like to turn to a tutor of nutrition courses at Superprof.A Superprof tutor can work with you to understand your calorie requirements, and can also give you further information about the principles of good nutrition, essential cooking skills, as well as offering personalised meal plan ideas that will appeal to you. Such meals will likely include a balance of carbohydrates, healthy fats, and proteins such as lean meats to ensure you remain full and satisfied.A tutor can be a really great resource to have, whether you want to keep on top of tracking your calories, you're looking at losing fat, or want to get into a healthy body mass index. Even if you want tips on how to maintain or increase your level of physical activity, a Superprof nutrition tutor can be there to assist to ensure you have a good balance of diet and exercise in your life.Read about how to maintain a healthy pregnancy diet.

How to Select the Best Song for a Musical Theater Audition
How to Select the Best Song for a Musical Theater Audition Sign up successful 1) Follow All Requirements Outlined by the Producing Organization Length (in minutes, seconds, or bars) Time it! Style/Tempo (upbeat, ballad, blues, pop, legit, etc.) Give them what they ask for! Format (CD, flash drive, sheet music, etc.) Make sure karaoke tracks have lead vocal eliminated. They want to hear YOU, not another recording artist. If using sheet music, make sure that all the notes are visible, no cut off lines at the bottom! Sometimes companies specify formats with sheet music. Follow them! If there is no requested format, taping music back-to-back, 3-hole punching, and putting in a binder is a good way to go. Loose pages can create nightmares! Do not put plastic sleeves over music to protect it. This can cause glare. Mark all cuts, tempos, vamps, etc. 2) Pick a Song That Makes You Sound Great! Not the song you wish you could sing, and not the song you will sing well next year⦠the song you sound great on right now! Itâs good to get an objective, experienced set of ears here. Singers often get very attached to a favorite song that is special to them, but it might not be the most the best choice for any given audition. 3) Pick a Song That is in the Style, Range, and character of the role you are auditioning for. Do your homework and find out what the vocal range of the role is and what style of music they sing. Pick a song that shows that you can do what is needed for the character. 4) Avoid Songs That Are Currently Overdone, or Too Tied to a Particular Star. Itâs not to your advantage to be the 50th person to sing the same hit song the directors have heard all afternoon. Itâs not to your advantage to be compared to a beloved star. Most musical theatre organizations prefer to hear songs not from the show they are auditioning for. There are other considerations to make as well, but this is the survival list for top priorities for finding the best audition songs. When in doubt, consult your voice teacher or coach. They are there to help! Looking for specific song ideas? Check out our list of song recommendations! Alison C. has taught at San Jose State University, Chabot College, and privately. Tutoring Italian How to Set Your Private Tutor Rates How Much Should One Italian Lesson Cost? ChaptersThe Italy UK PartnershipSo You Want to Teach Italian... for How Much?Italian Learning: How Dear Are Language Lessons?Factors that Determine Your Fee ScheduleIs Italian Your Native Language? You love the language of Dante Alighieri. You are profligate in your use of Italian words and phrases and wish everyone could share your passion for the language and your ability to speak Italian. Thus you have established an online profile, so that you can teach Italian courses online. From what history tells us about passion and romance, living on passion alone is a short-lived proposition, at best. That you will need to collect fees from your students for every Italian lesson you impart is a given. How much to collect: there is an issue to debate. The average private tutoring session costs around £20 per hour, regardless of subject matter.Does that constitute an income you can comfortably live off of?More to the point: At that rate, how many Italian lessons would you have to teach in order t o earn a living wage? After long observation of market trends in private tutoring, Superprof has compiled statistics and concrete numbers.Read on to find out how to set your initial rates, grow your business and your income and, finally: how to make a lucrative living simply by teaching people how to speak Italian. The UK-Italy partnership extends far beyond food Source: Pixabay Credit: Katyasvlet us aver:Italy is the world's eighth-largest economythe UK ranks in the top five destinations for Italian importsItaly ranks in the top ten destinations for goods made in the UK.Those are the official economic statistics. Of the twenty regions on our favorite Boot, Tuscany rates the highest. All of these are practical reasons to want to learn Italian. These are also all ways to draw clients into your fun Italian lessons.Another great way to draw clients is to set enticing rates! So You Want to Teach Italian... for How Much?According to this Forbes article, people who speak more than one language are more valued as employees, and are suitably compensated.Sounds unbelievable, but such a declaration is something to consider for anyone entering the job market â" such as university students who are set to graduate, and those looking for tutoring jobs London or elsewhere in the UK.However, let us be perfectly frank: recruiters are more eager for job candidates who can speak French, German or Spanish.Currently, Italian seem s to fall 4th on the list of desired languages in the marketplace. That statement seems to beg the question: why learn Italian?Indeed: why not learn to speak German?According to this report by the British Council, Italian, though currently lagging on the list of the most in-demand languages, is set to rise to prominence in the next ten years.People who can speak Italian will become vital to Britain's economy, as well as to non-economic concerns in our country. In light of that information, we can (figuratively) thumb our noses at everyone who devotes so much time to learn Spanish, Arabic, German... all of those who want to learn Korean or try to speak Russian. If you speak Italian as a second language, or are a native speaker of any of the dialects from the country shaped like a boot, you have a huge market advantage, just now.It should be very easy for you to find students who want to learn how to speak Italian. In fact, they should be fairly breaking down your door with their eagerne ss and urgency to learn. Here is the quandary: inasmuch as you are not governed, directed or protected by any institution or official body, how do you propose to price yourself competitively? As a website dedicated to education, Superprof compiles annual statistics in an effort to better help and guide any subscribers in shaping their tutoring business.Analysis of mode value for any per-hour lesson fee given by a Superprof tutor is £20.That includes fitness training, maths lessons, homework help and any other subject that people need or want to learn, as well as language instruction.Pop quiz: do you think Italian language lessons are worth more or less per hour than any other subject? One session of Italian language tutoring could net you £20 Source: Pixabay Credit: StuxVerbs: conjugation through all of the tensesof special note: the Italian language has a formal 'you' that requires a different verb endingPronunciation: syllable stress, accent, phoneticsTranslation â" the effective and correct conversion of meaning and nuance, without the use of translation appsItalian for special applicationsItalian for business, Italian for juniors, Italian for travelers, etc.Considering all that is involved with teaching a language in general, and teaching Italian in particular: are you up to that challenge? Are you confident your students will improve their spoken Italian to the point that a sojourn in Tuscany, Sicily or Sardinia would not strain their language capabilities? If so, you could reasonably expect your pay to increase as you take your Italian learner from absolute beginner to fluency. In the meantime, as you are just starting out in your new career as an Italian teacher, you may think that compensation would be hard to come by.No worries there: of all the subjects people study solely for enrichment, a foreign language ranks in popularity right behind music. What are Language Enthusiasts Willing to Pay?Studying Italian in primary school, taking Italian lessons onlin e; signing up for intensive lessons several times per week or participating in linguistic immersion...enlisting the aid of a private Italian tutor in-home.There is no lack of avenues for Italian speakers at beginner level, or any other level, to pursue in their language learning endeavours.Obviously, full immersion into the language, say by an extended stay in Italy and matriculating at an Italian school, is the best way to become fluent. As long as one has the funds to do so, that is.Failing relocation to Florence, the best way to learn Italian would no doubt be engaging a private tutor.Where you live is a factor in how much you can charge for your lessons Source: Pixabay Credit: sasintFactors that Determine Your Fee ScheduleHaving already established that £20 is the average going rate for one hour of instruction, let us now see exactly what would be expected of you, and how you could command more.Where do you Live?Geographical location is of primary consideration when setting your fee schedule. In compiling averages of income for independent tutors (of all subjects, not just language), we found that tutors in metropolitan centers such as London or Bath could command more, and were busier than those in smaller communities or in rural areas.Posting an advert â" âProgress rapidly in your Italian studies with a native speaker!â, âIt's easy to learn Italian!â, âLearn Italian before your next trip to Italy!â, âSpeak Italian fluently!â, on any bulletin board in any major city is sure to bring you greater emolument than in any village.Online or In Person?Perhaps you're a former Italian teacher looking for jobs for ex teachers? You could surely reason that a one-on-one Italian teacher would be paid more than a teacher who offers Italian language courses online. However, the online language instructor would be spared travel expenses and save a lot of time, going from one tutee's home to the next â" in the rain, snow, baking sun and during peak traffic hours.Their clientèle is not limited to their immediate geographical area, either! Here is another point to consider: people are busy these days; not necessarily available, even on a schedule. That might explain the popularity of language apps such as Duolingo and Busuu! And, people are not necessarily trusting enough anymore to welcome people into their home. Thus, even though you might live in a major metropolis, you may consider diversifying your teaching methods to include online instruction. You may well attract a larger client base online than by canvassing door to door!Your Level of Teaching ExperienceA teacher's methodology is critical to students learning a new language.Your ways of imparting instruction depend largely on how much experience you have in doing so.Are you a certified Italian teacher with years of classroom instruction under your belt? What age groups have you taught? What if you've only ever worked with college students getting ready to enrol at Università per Str anieri di Perugia?Giving extracurricular lessons to five-year olds would be a decided change of pace, and require a new everything, from learning materials to teaching mannerisms. Is Italian Your Native Language? This question is not as straightforward as it seems. If you are bilingual and Italian is your second language, you most likely learned Standard Italian, modeled on the Tuscan dialect â" as opposed to the Roman dialect spoken in the country's capital.Contrary to other countries, Italian's standard vernacular is not driven by its principal city.If you are native Italian, you could well speak any of that country's thirty four dialects! This is a critical point to consider when advertising your services and setting your rates. If your student hopes to attend the University for Foreigners in Siena, teaching the Genoan dialect would not work for him at all.Conversely, if she wants to go to Genoa and you are from Venice... not even your buongiorno would be the same! The point is: merel y stating you are fluent in Italian is not necessarily grounds for hiring, let alone commanding a high fee.Citing any measure of teaching experience is not necessarily your passport to promoting Italian language and culture. The best way to determine how much you could charge for helping people with their Italian pronunciation and comprehension is to match your language skills to the people who want to learn them.To get started, especially if you are a novice language teacher (or, being native Italian, your English skills are still developing), teach only a particular aspect of the language, such as conversational Italian, or Italian for Beginners. If your English language skills are still developing, you could propose a language exchange program wherein you both could learn for free! You would be gaining skills toward future earnings! You could teach Italian in relation with some aspect of the culture: cooking, music or Italian opera. As this would be a relative niche market, you may b e able to charge more for your lessons! No matter which way you go, your speaking Italian is a gateway to future earnings. All you have to figure out is the best way to access them.Capisce, caro?
Understanding whole number representations
Understanding whole number representations Whole number is a non-decimal number, non-negative number starting from zero to positive infinity. The whole number is represented by W = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.}. In a whole number the digit to the extreme right is the ones place. The digit next to it is the tens and so on. While rounding to the nearest whole number if the number to the right of the rounding number is less the 5 round down and if the number is 5 or more round up. Then replace the removed digits by zeroes in the given number. Example 1: What is 3,569 rounded to nearest tens? Solution: The number in the tens place is 6 for the number 3,569. The ones place if greater than 5 round up or else round down. The number to the right of the tenss place i.e. ones place is 9 which is greater than 5. Hence round up for the tens place = 6 + 1 = 7. Replace all the numbers to the right of tens by zeros. Hence rounding the number is 3,570. Question: Multiple choice question (Pick the correct option.) Cindy has 4 packets of crackers. She shared half of them with her friend. How much did she share? a) 2 packets b) 4 packets c) packet d) none of these. Correct answer: option a. Explanation: Number of cracker packets Cindy has = 4. Half of 4 packets = 4 x 1/2 = 2 Packets. Hence Cindy shared 2 packets of crackers with her friend.
What is it Like to Attend Ithaca College
What is it Like to Attend Ithaca College The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences, as well. Ene graduated from Ithaca College in 2014 with a Bachelors degree in Biochemistry. She tutors Biology tutoring, Chemistry tutoring, Physics tutoring, and many other subjects. Check out her review of Ithaca College: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Ene: The Ithaca College campus is safe, a bit secluded, and of medium size. On-campus housing is very close to campus classes, and in the summertime, I would advise students to walk, instead of drive, to their classes. The winters are very cold, however. The college is about 20-25 minutes from the Ithaca Commons by foot. Buses arrive every thirty minutes on the weekdays, and they run until a little after 1:00 a.m. The campus is secluded from the town, and it is kept safe by public safety officers who drive around, especially at night. Only residents of a building have access to the main entrance with their IDs. In the event that a student is afraid to walk alone, there are escort services available free of charge. A car or bike is not necessary, especially if you live on campus, but a car can be useful after the buses stop running (if you live off campus and during the winter). VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Ene: The professors and advisers are very easy to reach, especially during office hours. But most times, I could just stop by a professors office and have a chat with him or her. Most teaching assistants (TAs) are students, and they provide their email information to students. They are available through TA sessions and by appointment. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Ene: There are numerous socialization opportunities, especially for freshmen. The First Year Experience introduces students to various student organizations and provides a list of fun things to do in Ithaca. The resident assistants are also very supportive, and they always come up with activities that students can do together. Collaborations between student organizations provide another way for students who are not freshmen to socialize. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Ene: Ithaca College is known for its Music, Theatre, and Television Radio majors. I studied Biochemistry because I love both biology and chemistry, and I wanted a chance to study both. The department is small when compared to other departments, and this made it easier to get to know my fellow students and teachers in the department. Professors had time to answer my individual questions, and I was able to do research with a professor who supervised and advised me. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Ene: I was an international student who enrolled in the spring semester, and the friends I made were mostly exchange students who left in following semesters. It was a bit rough for me to go out and meet people, but once I started to join clubs and take classes outside my major, I had more chances to socialize. Ithaca College has no Greek life of its own, but students can join fraternities and sororities at Cornell University. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Ene: Career Services offers walk-in sessions for tasks like resume and cover letter writing. They also provide opportunities for students to complete mock interviews. Every semester, there is at least one job fair with between 80-100 recruiters. In addition, there is an alumni mentorship program that allows students to contact and seek advice from alumni of the college. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Ene: Dorm lounges are hardly ever used unless there is a floor event or when students want to watch shows together. There is only one library, which can get crowded during exam periods. But there are multiple computer labs and study lounges where students can study. The library is open 24 hours a day on weekdays. The computer labs are open until late at night. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Ene:Ithaca also houses Cornell University, and students from Ithaca College have the chance to join clubs at Cornell University and to take classes there. It is a great way to meet other students. Ithaca has many gorges and parks that are fun to explore in the summer, and there are many restaurants downtown to explore, as well. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Ene: The largest classes are typically introductory classes of up to 100 students (in the sciences). But once you move from 100-level classes, class sizes usually fall to between 10 (for small classes) to about 40 (for the larger classes). I was pleased with the class size because there was more room for individual questions and discussions. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Ene: I went into college as a Biology major. At that point, I hated chemistry. I remember my first chemistry class with a certain professor and immediately falling in love with chemistry because he taught it so well and enthusiastically. So after that class, I changed my major to Biochemistry. Check out Enes tutoring profile. The views expressed in this article do not necessarily represent the views of Varsity Tutors.
The Long Awaited Arrival of a Students Honest Review of The Standardized Test
The Long Awaited Arrival of a Studentâs Honest Review of 'The Standardized Test' ACT SAT Prep and College Admissions Blog As a rising senior in college, I have had my share of first hand experience with standardized tests. Through elementary, middle, and high school, students in my state (like most states) are required to take assessment exams. When I had finally suffered through my last of those, the SATs and ACTs were right around the corner ready to greet me with open arms. I, on the other hand, wasnât sure I was quite as ready to accept the challenge. Even now, it seems as if new variations of standardized testing are being created yearly. Although a lot of controversy has surrounded the validity of this method of evaluation, for better or for worse, this is our countryâs preferred approach. Instead of fighting it, I learned how to live with it. And this is an evaluation of my experience. Hopefully, if you yourself have not yet experienced the SATs and ACTs, or other similar standardized tests, this article will help ease your fears and confusion. PRELIMINARY ADVICE Any standardized test comes with a few absolutes: you have a limited amount of time to complete the exam; the subject area is large and broad; multiple choice is more than likely involved, and you are in a controlled environment. Study and prepare accordingly. Research the format of the test before test day so that there will be no surprises. Arrive prepared with pencils, erasers, water, and a calculator. I always felt better when I knew I had everything I may need. Also take a sweatshirt; you have no idea what temperature the room will be. These tests are usually scheduled for early morning. If youâre not a naturally early riser, get lots of sleep the night before, at least eight hours. THINGS IâVE LEARNED THAT WILL BENEFIT YOU AND YOUR SCORE Take the practice version of the required standardized test (e.g. PSAT for the SAT). It seems like an unnecessary evil, but trust me, it will help you. Instead of paying to take the SATs three times, I believe you can pay less to take the PSATs once, the SATs twice and end up with the same score. Experiencing a similar environment with less pressure allows you to focus more on the content of the test and allow your mind to subconsciously get used to the time crunch, material, and format. As weâve all heard many times, practice makes perfect. Take the standardized test more than once. If at all financially possible, do it. I took the SAT, was fine with the outcome, but decided I could do better. With the SATs, you receive a breakdown of your overall score. This way, I was able to see which areas in particular I was weaker. Then, get help. I then worked with a tutorto improve on these specific subjects. This was much more helpful to me than if I had studied for the entire test before taking it because I didnât waste time going over what I already excelled at. We all have strengths and weaknesses, and taking the SATs the first time can spell out exactly what you need to work on. An important thing to master when taking these types of tests is to complete each section. Donât get stuck on one question. Although this is good advice for any testing situation, it is even moreso necessary in regards to standardized tests. It is easy to get anxious when you see something you donât know. If itâs multiple choice, first eliminate any answers you know canât be true. Among the remaining possibilities, take a [hopefully] educated guess. But whatever you do, donât dwell. Answer the question, and move on. Circle all the ones you werenât sure about and if there is time, go back and see if you can figure them out. There may have been an answer hidden later in the test or your brain may have retrieved some previously forgotten information. Lastly, focus. When you walk into that testing room, know that for the next few hours, this is your sole job. There should be no wondering if someone has texted you, no looking around the room for potential boyfriends/girlfriends, no planning out the next weekend with your friends. Those few hours will go by and then you wonât have any more time to do what you came there to do. These tests are important, and someone has paid for you to be there. Take advantage of it, think positively, and know that concentration is necessary to achieve the desired score. THE ACT The ACT is a relatively new test that colleges and universities, especially in the Midwest and Western states, are adopting to replace the traditional SATs. The ACT is offered across the country, and currently, most schools are accepting either test score as appropriate academic measurement. When I was deciding whether or not to take the ACT along with the SAT, it was still fairly new, especially to the East Coast. The main difference is that the ACT has a Science section, which the SAT does not. It was also to be believed that the ACT had a less strenuous and shorter Mathematics section. It was another standardized test that I didnât want to take, but I was intrigued because Math was my lowest score on the SATs. The ACT was certainly the better test for me. The science section contains graphs and articles that one must analyze and interpret, along with requiring a basic knowledge of scientific concepts. Although subjectively the Math section did not seem easier or much shorter, I did score considerably higher on that particular area. I used my scores on the ACT for every college I applied to and was happy I took the chance and signed up for this newer version of standardized testing. I would recommend the ACT to students who struggle with math concepts and/or excel at science. Many people shy away from the scientific aspect, but it is mostly a test of logic and interpretation. Especially if you are unsatisfied with your performance on the SATs, give the ACTs a chance.
