Understanding whole number representations Whole number is a non-decimal number, non-negative number starting from zero to positive infinity. The whole number is represented by W = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.}. In a whole number the digit to the extreme right is the ones place. The digit next to it is the tens and so on. While rounding to the nearest whole number if the number to the right of the rounding number is less the 5 round down and if the number is 5 or more round up. Then replace the removed digits by zeroes in the given number. Example 1: What is 3,569 rounded to nearest tens? Solution: The number in the tens place is 6 for the number 3,569. The ones place if greater than 5 round up or else round down. The number to the right of the tenss place i.e. ones place is 9 which is greater than 5. Hence round up for the tens place = 6 + 1 = 7. Replace all the numbers to the right of tens by zeros. Hence rounding the number is 3,570. Question: Multiple choice question (Pick the correct option.) Cindy has 4 packets of crackers. She shared half of them with her friend. How much did she share? a) 2 packets b) 4 packets c) packet d) none of these. Correct answer: option a. Explanation: Number of cracker packets Cindy has = 4. Half of 4 packets = 4 x 1/2 = 2 Packets. Hence Cindy shared 2 packets of crackers with her friend.
